“The Man Who Killed Jim Crow”

Charles Hamilton Houston worked tirelessly with the NAACP to end segregation and Jim Crow laws.

  1. Charles Hamilton Houston was born in Wash. D.C. in 1895.
  2. He graduated valedictorian from Amherst College in 1915.
  3. He served in the Army in France during World War I.
  4. He graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School.
  5. He worked extensively as Special Counsel for the NAACP.
  6. His work focused on taking down Jim Crowe laws.
  7. He is credited with defeating the “separate but equal” doctrine.
  8. He proved that education wasn’t equal in segregated schools.
  9. He passed away in 1950 from a heart attack.
  10. Passage of Brown v. Board of Education in ‘54 fulfilled his work.
