7.8 earthquake hits near Nepal capital of Kathmandu.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal has killed over 4,000 people and destroyed much of Kathmandu.

  1. Nepal lies on the northeast side of India. Population: 31 million.
  2. 1 million people live in its capital of Kathmandu.
  3. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu on Sunday.
  4. Over 4,400 people are dead. Over 8,000 are injured.
  5. The death toll is expected to rise to 10,000.
  6. Aid is flooding into Nepal. Workers are struggling to disperse it.
  7. Rural areas are suffering greatly as in-roads have been closed.
  8. 8 million people have been affected by the earthquake.
  9. The quake caused deadly avalanches on nearby Mt. Everest.
