- The revolution ousted US-backed President Fulgencio Batista.
- Castro instituted a socialist state & seized US property.
- He also executed former officials from President Batista regime.
- In 1961, the US cut all diplomatic ties with Cuba.
- Since then, Cuba/US relations have been up and down.
- US/Cuba have united on drugs, environment, & immigration.
- On Monday, the US & Cuba opened embassies in their capitals.
- Yet issues remain: there is still a trade embargo against Cuba.
- The US has also called for more human rights & democracy
