The US and Cuba have opened embassies in each other's capitals to normalize relations.

  1. In 1959, Fidel Castro led the Cuban Revolution.
  2. The revolution ousted US-backed President Fulgencio Batista.
  3. Castro instituted a socialist state & seized US property.
  4. He also executed former officials from President Batista regime.
  5. In 1961, the US cut all diplomatic ties with Cuba.
  6. Since then, Cuba/US relations have been up and down.
  7. US/Cuba have united on drugs, environment, & immigration.
  8. On Monday, the US & Cuba opened embassies in their capitals.
  9. Yet issues remain: there is still a trade embargo against Cuba.
  10. The US has also called for more human rights & democracy
