Following the Umbrella Revolution last year, pro-democracy legislators have vowed to veto a new bill from Beijing that they say promises universal suffrage.

  1. Hong Kong was a British colony until the UK gave it back in ‘97.
  2. Part of the deal was that HK would govern itself for 50 years.
  3. But people in HK say Beijing has too much influence in voting.
  4. Beijing gets to approve any political candidates on the ballot.
  5. Last year, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers protested.
  6. It was part of the Occupy movement and lasted for 4 months.
  7. This week, Beijing submitted a proposal for universal suffrage.
  8. But they kept in the part about approving all candidates.
  9. Pro-democracy legislators in HK have vowed to veto the bill.
  10. More protests may be coming.
