Edward Brooke was the first African-American elected to the US Senate.

  1. Edward Brooke was born in Washington D.C. in 1919.
  2. He joined the army in 1941 and saw combat in Italy.
  3. In 1962 he was elected Attorney General of Massachusetts.
  4. Making him the 1st African-American AG elected in any state.
  5. In 1966 he was elected Senator of Massachusetts.
  6. He served 2 terms from 1967 to 1979.
  7. He co-authored the Fair Housing Act of 1968.
  8. He was the first Republican to call for Nixon’s resignation.
  9. Bush gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.
  10. He passed away on January 3, 2015. He was 95.
